In the middle of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria is a cenotaph with the words For you South Africa. The cenotaph is an empty grave symbolizing the final resting place of Piet Retief and the other Trekkers who died during the Great Trek. Every year, around 12:00 on 16 December the sun shines at an angle through the dome, highlighting the words on the cenotaph.
